Accessory Buildings, Fences, Decks & Pools

PoolWhen

You want to construct a detached accessory building, pool, fence, deck or patio on your property.

Why

The permitting process for accessory structures is designed to ensure compliance with the Kenosha County General Zoning and Shoreland / Floodplain Zoning Ordinance. A zoning permit must be issued prior to receiving a building permit from your local town building inspector.

Notable Exemptions:

Detached accessory structures 150 sq. ft. or less are exempt from requiring a zoning permit. However, a building permit may be required by your local building inspector.

Decks 4' x 6' or less for immediate ingress/egress to a dwelling unit are exempt from requiring a zoning permit. However, a building permit may be required by your local town building inspector.

Pools with the ability to hold 18 inches or less of water depth are exempt from requiring a zoning permit.

How

It is recommended that you meet with county development staff prior to submitting your zoning permit application for your project to discuss the basics of your application, such as well and septic location, building design and building setback requirements.

You must submit your zoning permit application, stake-out survey or site plan, floor plan layout(s) and architectural drawings along with the appropriate fee based on the Kenosha County Department of Planning and Development Fee Schedule (PDF).
