These resources are a very limited list of national and local resources that focus their research, outreach and educational efforts on a particular and prevalent disease. This list below is a good place to start in the search for additional specialized information.

Cancer

  • American Cancer Society: The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem.

  • National Cancer Institute: The National Cancer Institute coordinates the National Cancer Program. This program conducts and supports research, training, health information dissemination, and other programs with respect to the cause, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of cancer, rehabilitation from cancer, and the continuing care of cancer patients and the families of cancer patients.
  • National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship: The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship works for quality cancer care for all people touched by cancer through advocacy, policy and resources.

Diabetes

  • American Diabetes Association: The American Diabetes Association is a nationwide organization that works to reduce or eliminate the prevalence of diabetes through research, community involvement and information.
  • What is Diabetes?: From Diabetes Research Institute, learn about Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes, causes, symptoms and treatment, support for parents and managing diabetes.
  • Diabetes Public Health Resource: The Center for Disease Control’s Division of Diabetes Translation translates diabetes research into daily practice. They work to understand the impact of the disease, influence health outcomes, and improve access to quality health care.

  • COPD Foundation: The COPD Foundation works to expand services for COPD. They also work to improve the lives of individuals affected by COPD through research, education and advocacy programs that will lead to prevention, and someday, a cure for this disease.

  • Obesity Action Coalition: The Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) is the only non-profit organization whose sole focus is representing individuals affected by obesity.
  • Obesity Society: The Obesity Society works to advance the science-based understanding of the causes, consequences, prevention and treatment of obesity. Through research, education and advocacy, they can better understand, prevent, and treat obesity and improve the lives of those affected.
