What is Narcan? Narcan nasal spray is the brand name of naloxone hydrochloride and is used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.

Common opioids include Heroin, Oxycodone (OxyContin and Percocet), Fentanyl, Morphine, Codeine (Tylenol 3 and 4), Hydrocodone (Vicodin, Lorcet, Zortab, Demerol), Buprenorphine (Suboxone), Methadone, and Nitazene (Isotonitazene, Flunitazene, Metonitazene, Protonitazene, Etonitazene, Clonitazene).

Are overdose deaths a problem in Kenosha County? In 2022, there were 58 toxicity deaths, 45 of which were opioid-related.

Why should I know how to use Narcan? An overdose can happen anytime, anywhere, to anyone. Addiction has no stereotypes. You could save the life of a friend, relative, co-worker, or stranger.

Do you need to be a medical provider to use Narcan? No, anyone can learn how to use and give Narcan.

Is there legislation that protects those who help overdose victims? Yes! Wisconsin has the Good Samaritan Law or Wisconsin Act 194 that states anyone who calls for help or drops off someone experiencing a drug overdose will not be charged with possession or paraphernalia. Limitation, the person who overdosed is not covered. Any other crime committed at the scene is not protected by law.

Wisconsin Act 200 covers anyone, regardless of medical background from being liable for administering naloxone when acting in good faith that the person is experiencing an opioid overdose.

How can I get trained? Watch the video at the bottom of this page (available in English and Spanish).

How can I get Narcan? After watching the training video, you can get your FREE Narcan at the Kenosha County Job Center Clinic, 8600 Sheridan Road, Kenosha.

Vending machines also available: Kenosha County Public Health now has vending machines that dispense free Narcan and other related items at two locations: the Kenosha Human Development Services Crisis Center (1202 60th Street) and the Sharing Center (25700 Wilmot Road in Trevor). The HOPE Council also has a machine available at 6103 39th Ave.

How can I test my drugs: Fentanyl test strips, which allow for the testing of other substances for the presence of fentanyl — a deadly opioid that is added to many drugs — are now legal under a 2022 change to Wisconsin state law. Kenosha County Public Health now provides these along with Narcan at the Job Center Clinic and in the vending machines. Additionally, the HOPE Council vending machine includes test strips for Xylazine, a dangerous tranquilizer that is increasingly being found in the illegal drug supply.
