What is Narcan? Narcan nasal spray is the brand name of naloxone hydrochloride and is used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
Common opioids include Heroin, Oxycodone (OxyContin and Percocet), Fentanyl, Morphine, Codeine (Tylenol 3 and 4), Hydrocodone (Vicodin, Lorcet, Zortab, Demerol), Buprenorphine (Suboxone), Methadone, and Nitazene (Isotonitazene, Flunitazene, Metonitazene, Protonitazene, Etonitazene, Clonitazene).
Are overdose deaths a problem in Kenosha County? In 2022, there were 58 toxicity deaths, 45 of which were opioid-related.
Why should I know how to use Narcan? An overdose can happen anytime, anywhere, to anyone. Addiction has no stereotypes. You could save the life of a friend, relative, co-worker, or stranger.
Do you need to be a medical provider to use Narcan? No, anyone can learn how to use and give Narcan.
Is there legislation that protects those who help overdose victims? Yes! Wisconsin has the Good Samaritan Law or Wisconsin Act 194 that states anyone who calls for help or drops off someone experiencing a drug overdose will not be charged with possession or paraphernalia. Limitation, the person who overdosed is not covered. Any other crime committed at the scene is not protected by law.
Wisconsin Act 200 covers anyone, regardless of medical background from being liable for administering naloxone when acting in good faith that the person is experiencing an opioid overdose.
