Conservation practices - a tractor in a fieldConservation practices are tools used to help conserve and improve our natural resources. According to the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, conservation practice means a facility or practice that is designed to prevent or reduce soil erosion, prevent or reduce non-point source water pollution, or achieve or maintain compliance with soil and water conservation standards. Conservation practice includes a nutrient management plan.

The Wisconsin Interagency Quality Steering Team (QST) developed a Guide to Conservation Programs for Wisconsin Landowners. This brochure provides a quick reference to federal, state and local cost-share conservation programs in Wisconsin.

To learn more, view Conservation Choices (PDF), a guide that features 26 common conservation practices. It explains how each practice works and how it helps improve a farm. The guide also lists things to think about when considering a practice and points out basic maintenance needs.
