National Night Out will be celebrated at five Kenosha locations and one in Twin Lakes from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2018.

The Kenosha locations are: The Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha, 1330 52nd St.; Lincoln Park, 6900 18th Ave.; Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 5601 Washington Road; St. John’s Lutheran Church, 3833 Eighth Ave.; and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and Spirit Alive, 8760 37th Ave.

The Twin Lakes event, organized separately by the Twin Lakes Police Department, will take place at St. John’s Catholic Church, 701 N. Lake Ave., Twin Lakes.

Each location will feature food, prizes and entertainment. At the Kenosha events, there will also be community resource tables with information from agencies including the Kenosha Unified School District, the Racine-Kenosha Community Action Agency, the Kenosha County Division of Health, Holiday House, the Kenosha Community Health Center and many more.

Now celebrating its 35th year, National Night Out is a coast-to-coast effort to build awareness of and strengthen participation in local anticrime efforts.

“We know that bringing neighbors together makes for stronger neighborhoods and a healthier community,” Kenosha County Executive Jim Kreuser said. “National Night Out brings people and resources together, and helps to promote positive relationships between law enforcement, other public service agencies and the public.”

As part of the county’s 2009 gang-prevention plan, one National Night Out event was planned at McKinley Elementary School, drawing more than 300 neighbors. The event then grew to multiple locations, with the Boys & Girls Club becoming the central location for the county’s festivities in 2013.

This year’s free events in Kenosha are being sponsored by Niagara Bottling, Walmart, Target, Piggly Wiggly-North, the Mary Lou and Arthur F. Mahone Foundation, the Kenosha Police Department, Greater Mount Hebron Church and Community Impact Programs. In addition, the City of Kenosha and Kenosha County are sponsors of the Boys & Girls Club and Lincoln Park events.

The Kenosha County Division of Health is increasing its involvement in the activities this year, offering free Narcan training for adults at the Lincoln Park and Twin Lakes locations. Narcan is a medication, available for free via a grant that the Division of Health has received, that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose.

At the Boys & Girls Club location, the Division of Health will present information about the Kenosha Lifecourse Initiative for Healthy Families and the HUD Lead Hazard Control program.

All children must be accompanied by an adult to participate in the National Night Out activities, advised Donna Rhodes, gang intervention supervisor for the Kenosha County Division of Children and Family Services.
