The Kenosha County Division of Health is highlighting three stories of recovery as it commemorates September as National Recovery Month.

These stories, captured on video, highlight the hopeful and human side of treatment and recovery. The first two videos can be viewed at http://bit.ly/2R3Joao and http://bit.ly/2xFN6z2, or on the Division of Health’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/KenoshaCountyHealth. The third story will be released soon.

The 2018 Recovery Month theme is “Join the Voices for Recovery: Invest in Health, Home, Purpose, and Community.”

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) sponsors Recovery Month, now in its 29th year. The 2018 observance aims to increase awareness and encourage people to discuss behavioral health needs and the need to tackle our nation’s opioid crisis.

“Sadly, Kenosha County leads the state in opioid overdoses, with 49 in 2017,” said Cynthia Johnson, Kenosha County Division of Health Director and Health Officer.

Two Kenosha County Division of Health initiatives that are working to reduce opioid use and abuse are the Medication Assistance Treatment (MAT) and Narcan Distribution programs.

The MAT program provides medication to program participants and partners with Professional Services Group to offer behavioral therapy and a recovery coach to assist those with an opioid use disorder.

The Narcan Distribution program trains community members and first responders on how to administer Narcan nasal spray, a medication that will revive someone experiencing an opioid overdose until emergency medical help arrives.

For more information on treatment and training, please contact the Division of Health at 262-605-6700 or narcan@kenoshacounty.org.
