A recent grant award will allow for the continuation of a program that provides financial aid for home repairs for non-city residents in Kenosha County.

The Wisconsin Department of Administration’s Division of Housing awarded $1 million to the Southern Housing Region for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Housing Program.

The Southern Housing Region is represented by the counties of Kenosha, Racine, Walworth, Columbia, Dodge, Jefferson, Ozaukee, Rock, Sauk and Washington.

Entitlement communities that receive their own CDBG funding are not included in this consortium; these include the cities of Kenosha, Racine, Beloit and Janesville.

“If you live in Kenosha County but outside of the city and you need help paying for repairs to your home, help is available through the Southern Housing Region,” said Kenosha County Executive Jim Kreuser. “I’m glad to see this program will continue to provide assistance to those who need it.”

Southern Housing Region funds provide resources across Wisconsin to address affordable housing and community development. The funds are available for the following types of projects:

  • Owner-occupied households: These funds will be lent to income-eligible households for eligible home repairs. These are 0 percent interest, deferred-payment loans – borrowers do not have to pay them back for 30 years from the date of the note, unless they sell the house or no longer live there.
  • Homebuyer assistance: These funds will be lent to income-eligible tenants for down-payment and closing-cost assistance. There may also be funds available to make repairs to the home that is purchased. These are also no-interest, deferred-payment loans that do not need to be paid for 30 years, or unless the buyer sells the house or moves.
  • Landlords: Zero-interest installment loans are available for landlords who rent to tenants who are low- to moderate- income.

The funds can be used for handicap accessibility, windows, doors, siding, roofing, electrical, plumbing and heating.

Additional information is available by contacting MSA at 1-800-552-6330 and referencing the Southern Housing Region. For more information about home rehabilitation loan programs in the City of Kenosha, please call 262-653-4030.
