Kenosha County is being recognized as a Wisconsin Active Together Community for its commitment to bolstering quality of life by making it easier for people to walk, bike and be active.

The honor, announced last week, was granted specifically to the Kenosha County Multiuse Trail Committee for its strategies to develop a safe, functional infrastructure of trails and bicycle routes.

The committee was also recognized for its pledge to continue to make local progress in the future while taking part in a larger statewide partnership network to support active communities.

“Kenosha County is honored to be a part of the Wisconsin Active Together alliance,” said County Executive Jim Kreuser. “We’ve made it a priority to promote bicycling, walking and other active recreation as part of our efforts to enhance our quality of life, and it’s gratifying to see that work recognized on a statewide level.”

Wisconsin Active Together is a group of diverse partners working to promote healthy, thriving communities where people easily and safely walk, ride a bicycle and be physically active.

Kenosha County joins Washington County and the City of Jefferson as the latest additions to a list that now totals 24 Wisconsin Active Communities.

“It’s an opportunity to work locally while being part of something larger happening across the state, said Jen Walker, Wisconsin Active Communities Alliance coordinator. “We want to celebrate local progress in promoting opportunities to increase physical activity, through community design that creates safe ways to walk and bike and more places to play and be active.”

In 2010, Kreuser brought together a “Blue Ribbon Panel” of stakeholders from across the county, regional planners and bicycling advocates. The group then secured Transportation Alternatives Program funding from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to collaboratively develop the Comprehensive Bike Plan for Kenosha County 2025, ultimately adopted by the County Board in 2013.

The Kenosha County Multi-Use Trail Committee was then created to oversee the ongoing implementation of the plan. The committee and county staff apply for grants and bring together action teams to plan and promote active events such as Bike-to-Work Weeks and the Kenosha County Bike Rodeo.

Looking forward, the county is in the process of implementing a bicycle wayfinding signage system and is working to implement a bike share program. Kenosha County also participates in the “Route of the Badger,” a regional initiative working to transform 340 miles of existing trails into an interconnected 500-plus-mile network across southeastern Wisconsin.

Kenosha County in 2015 received an “Honorable Mention” Bike Friendly City Designation from the League of American Bicyclists.
