[ARCHIVED] Kenosha County Highway S expansion progress continues

County Executive Jim Kreuser tours the Highway S reconstruction project

The largest county trunk highway project in Kenosha County’s history is continuing to make solid progress, county officials said today.

Work on the 3.6-mile expansion of Highway S between Highway 31 and the Interstate 94 East Frontage Road is ongoing, with completion expected late this fall.

The roadway remains open to one lane of traffic in each direction between Highway 31 and 38th Street (formerly Highway N); a long-term closure between that point and the East Frontage Road continues.

“I had the opportunity to tour the site with project leaders earlier this week, and I was impressed by the progress they’ve made so far this season,” said County Executive Jim Kreuser. “You can now get a true feel of how the road’s new profile will provide a new, faster, safer gateway between I-94, Somers and Kenosha’s north side.”

Once complete, Highway S will be a four-lane, divided highway from Highway 31 (Green Bay Road) to the interstate. The project also includes drainage enhancements, traffic signal upgrades and an off-street, multiuse path for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Work completed to date includes:

  • Construction of the new westbound lanes, with lower lifts of asphalt now placed.
  • Box culvert extension and new wingwalls constructed on both sides of the Pike River crossing.
  • New bridges constructed over the Canadian Pacific Railway and Kilbourn Ditch; new at-grade crossing constructed at the Union Pacific Railroad tracks.
  • Grading and base aggregate for the multiuse path.
  • Widening of Highway H intersection completed, with asphalt placed.
  • Grading work on new eastbound lanes.

Remaining work includes:

  • Final storm sewer installations near 84th Avenue.
  • Areas of grading west of the Union Pacific crossing.
  • Completion of curb and gutter from the Union Pacific crossing east to Brumback Boulevard.
  • Asphalt paving on the eastbound lanes from Highway H to Brumback Boulevard.
  • Asphalt paving on remaining gaps in the multiuse path.
  • Signalized intersections at Amazon, Highway H and Brumback Boulevard.
  • Pedestrian signals at Highway 31.
  • Final asphalt paving surface lift throughout the project.

“We appreciate the public’s continued patience as our team works toward the final stretch of this two-year project,” said Kenosha County Highway Director Clement Abongwa. “As always, we encourage people to drive with caution and avoid distractions within the work area.”
