[ARCHIVED] Kenosha County's Bird City Designation

This spring, Kenosha County became the fifth county to achieve Bird City status from the Bird City Wisconsin (BCW) organization, bringing the program’s ranks statewide to 81 communities in BCW’s fourth year of this innovative conservation undertaking.

Modeled on the “Tree City USA” program, Bird City has developed 22 criteria across five categories, including habitat creation and protection, community forest management, limiting hazards to birds, public education, and recognition of International Migratory Bird Day. If a community meets at least seven of these it becomes an official “Bird City.”

Carl Schwartz, Bird City Wisconsin Coorinator, noted that Kenosha County met an impressive 12 of the criteria under the categories: Creation and Protection of Habitat; Promoting Effective Community Forest Management; Limiting or Removing Hazards to Birds; Public Education; and Celebration of International Migratory Bird Day.

On Saturday, September 20, 2014, Kenosha County will be hosting "Fall Fun Fest: Birds & Butterflies" (A Celebration of International Migratory Bird Day: “Why Birds Matter”). For more information, visit our calendar of events.
