[ARCHIVED] Jacobson notes celebration of County Treasurers Appreciation Week

County Treasurer's Office

As National Homeownership Month kicks off, Kenosha County Treasurer Teri Jacobson is encouraging people to join in a statewide celebration this week of the work county treasurers do in support of property owners in the state.

June 4-10, she said, is County Treasurers Appreciation Week, as proclaimed by Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers.

“I want to thank Governor Evers for recognizing the important work County Treasurers do for our state,” Jacobson said. “I would also like to celebrate Homeownership Month by encouraging everyone to learn more about how property taxes work in our state to help people be successful homeowners.”

County treasurers are a vital part of our local government, Jacobson said.

“They are county constitutional officers who are elected every four years to serve their community,” she said. “They act as important resources for their local community and wear many hats besides being a simple bookkeeper.”

Jacobson said county treasurers work with taxpayers daily, trying to find solutions to their problems. They get questions and refer people to a wide range of programs as they are a public face people can reach out to when they have issues, she said.

In recent years, Jacobson said county treasurers have worked closely with nonprofits, businesses, state and local governments to educate people about property taxes and help them through COVID by getting assistance from the Wisconsin Help for Homeowners program. More than $8 million have been given to help homeowners affected by COVID get caught up on their delinquent property taxes, she noted.

Jacobson said treasurers have also created a Property Tax 101 class to be taught to high school students as part of their Financial Literacy class or for new homeowners. The class is geared to help people better understand how property taxes are calculated, how their tax dollars are used, and what happens if their taxes are not paid on time.

“This information is essential for new homeowners to be successful and to have a more thoughtful dialogue on property taxes in our community,” Jacobson said.

Information on the class and samples can be found on the Wisconsin County Treasurer’s Association website at www.wicountytreasurers.com, or by contacting Kenosha County Treasurer Teri Jacobson at 262-653-2433 or Teri.Jacobson@kenoshacounty.org.

As the final installment deadline for property taxes payable in 2023 is approaching throughout the state, Jacobson reminds property owners to pay their final installment by July 31.
