[ARCHIVED] Volunteets needed for Mountain Bike Trail project

County Executive Jim Kreuser said a volunteer group that is building a new system of mountain bike trails at Silver Lake Park is in need of additional helping hands.

“This will be an excellent addition to the Kenosha County Parks System,” Kreuser said. “We appreciate the efforts of the Kenosha Off-Road Bicycle Association. They have done a great deal of work already and need some additional volunteers to finish the remaining 3 ½ to 4 ½ miles of trails.”

The Silver Lake Park trail plan includes 10-14 miles of purpose-built “singletrack” mountain bike trails that have been professionally designed by Great Lakes Trailbuilders. The sustainable dirt surface trails are being built by volunteers from KORBA. KORBA is a volunteer organization working with Kenosha County to bring sustainable mountain bike trails to the area.

Building of the Mountain Bike Trails at Silver Lake Park began in May 2014. KORBA volunteers have already completed about 7 miles of trails at the park.

Volunteers are needed and encouraged to attend the upcoming trail workdays. The next set of trail building days will be held October 12th, 19th and 26th starting at 9 a.m. in Lot 4 of Silver Lake Park, 27000 85th St., Silver Lake, 53170. Volunteers only need to bring gloves, and wear long sleeved shirts and long pants, as well as bring bug spray. Tools will be provided at the park. Volunteers are also encouraged to bring their bikes and ride the trails when the work is completed each day of the trail workdays.

KORBA is also seeking sponsors to assist with creating a Trailhead Kiosk, maps, tools and trail-grooming equipment.
