[ARCHIVED] Hotline established for off-road bike trail conditions

County Executive Jim Kreuser is pleased to announce that the 6.2 miles of the Silver Lake Mountain Bike trail is open for winter biking.

A trail conditions hotline, 262-857-1876, to relay the open or closed status of the trail has been put into service. Conditions are also posted on the KORBA Facebook page. People are asked to check on conditions before going to the trails. All double track hiking/biking trails and single track trails are being groomed by volunteers from the Kenosha Off-Road Bicycle Association.

Volunteers from KORBA built the trails. Work on expanding the trails will continue as weather permits.

Double track trails are open to standard mountain bikes, hikers, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and dog walkers.

Single track trails are open only to snow bikes (fat-bikes) or bikes with tires wider than 3.7 inches.

KORBA volunteers are donating their time to groom the trails so everyone can enjoy the trails during the winter. Please be respectful and walk, ski, snowshoe and ride traditional narrow tire mountain bikes only on the double track trails.

Fat-bikes originated in Alaska with tires wide enough to “float” on the snow and yet have traction. This is a rapidly evolving sport with recent predictions that Fat-Bikes will soon reach 1/3 of total bike manufacturing in the near future.

Kenosha County is pleased to be able to offer this new form of outdoor recreation in our area. KORBA members are available to answer questions about the sport via Facebook or email at KORBAinfo@gmail.com.

Trail maps and trail etiquette can be found on the KORBA Facebook or Kenosha County website, www.KenoshaCounty.org.

For more information about off-trail bike riding, or to volunteer to assist with building the trail network, call the Kenosha County Parks Division at 262-857-1869.
