[ARCHIVED] Kenosha County Parks Awarded Funding for West End Park Development

KD Park 2

Kenosha County Parks has been awarded the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Grant to develop the West End Park, locally known as KD Park, said Kenosha County Executive Jim Kreuser.

KD Park is located on the boundary between the Towns of Randall and Wheatland, adjacent to the Village of Twin Lakes.

In 2001, Kenosha County purchased a 234-acre former gravel mine site to convert to a park which was later expanded by 113 acres with Stewardship funding in 2012. KD Park features rolling topography, a 39-acre lake, wetlands, and remnant oak savannas.

“This park is a beautiful addition to Kenosha County and I look forward to seeing greater use as a result of the grant,” Kreuser said.

Kreuser thanked State Rep. Samantha Kerkman for her strong support of the project.
“I’m pleased Kenosha County is the recipient of the WDNR Stewardship Grant,” Kerkman said. “This award will help continue to develop the county’s newest park and bring more accessibility into this west end park.”

The stewardship grant will be a shared 50/50 match between the State and the Kenosha County to construct the main road and parking lots into KD Park. The total project cost will amount to $525,837.50.

This project is considered the first phase for the development of the park and will include the construction of the access drive located off CTH KD (352nd Avenue), as well as parking stalls, storm water management features, and signage. These improvements will allow visitors to access the park and its recreational amenities such as hiking paths, fishing, and non-motorized watercraft activities. The second phase of the project includes additional parking, boat ramp access to the lake, portable pier, and scuba diver platforms.

KD Park currently has a fenced, off-leash dog exercise area located off CTH F on the southeastern portion of the park, along with over four miles of maintained hiking trails, picnic areas, fishing, and cross-country ski trails. The KD Park masterplan highlights the importance of creating a Sustainable Living Park that emphasizes environmentally conscious planning, development, and maintenance of this park.
