[ARCHIVED] Ribbon cutting set to reopen West End (KD) Park

Kenosha County Executive Jim Kreuser has announced the reopening of West End Park, locally known as KD Park, located off of County Highway KD (352nd Avenue).

The park has been closed to the public since August for the construction of park improvements, including a paved parkway, parking stalls, signage and storm water management features. These developments create more accessibility for visitors use the park and its recreational amenities, such as hiking paths, fishing, and non-motorized watercraft activities.

The public is invited to join County Executive Jim Kreuser, Supervisor Dennis Elverman, chairman of the Public Works and Facilities Committee, members of the Kenosha County Board of Supervisors, and the Department of Public Works, at a ceremonial grand reopening and ribbon cutting at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, October 18th at the park.

The grand reopening event will give the public a sneak peek and insight into the development of KD Park, and a chance to review future plans and goals for this park.

Refreshments will be available, as well as scenic tours through the walking paths and trails. A limited number of kayaks will be available for free public use. Guests are encouraged to bring their own canoes, kayaks, fishing poles and other non-motorized water activities to enjoy KD Park and the lake.

KD Park is located on the boundary between the Towns of Randall and Wheatland, adjacent to the Village of Twin Lakes. KD Park features rolling topography, a 39-acre lake, wetlands, and remnant oak savannas. In 2001, Kenosha County purchased a 234-acre former gravel mine site to convert to a park. It did not open until 2010 and was later expanded by 113 acres with stewardship funding in 2012. The newest development was also completed with 50/50 stewardship funds.

The KD Park masterplan highlights the importance of creating a Sustainable Living Park that emphasizes environmentally conscious planning, development, and maintenance of this park.
