[ARCHIVED] Highway W reopens after summer-long reconstruction/relocation; other west-end projects continuing

Kenosha County Highway W (Fox River Road) is expected to reopen by the end of this week, as a summer-long project to straighten out a hairpin curve comes to a close.

The construction area, alongside the Fox River near 82nd Street in the Village of Salem Lakes, had been closed to through traffic since May 30. Work on the project is now substantially completed, said Clement Abongwa, Kenosha County highway director.

A new configuration of the curve moves the road about 75 feet to the west, onto property that the county acquired from private owners. This largely straightens out what had been a nearly-90-degree curve.

“What you see now is a much safer situation for motorists and nearby property owners,” Abongwa said.

But even with the curve now easier to navigate, Abongwa said drivers should still use caution and observe the 35-mph posted speed limit in the area.

The total cost of the Highway W project is roughly $800,000. Punch list work is all that remains for the contractor to complete, Abongwa said.

Other project updates:

  • Resurfacing of Highway JF (119th Street), which was scheduled to start Sept. 12, has not yet begun due to delays by the project contractor. Abongwa said prep work is now expected to begin by the end of this week, with paving to occur next week. Abongwa said project completion is still expected by the end of the month. This project involves the stretch of Highway JF between 259th Avenue and Highway 83 (Antioch Road). One lane will remain open during paving operations, with traffic flagged.
  • Resurfacing of Highway SA (Camp Lake Road/103rd Street) began Monday, as scheduled. The work, in the area stretching between Highway AH (276th Avenue) and Highway 83, is expected to continue through next week. One lane remains open, with traffic flagged.
  • Resurfacing work is now complete on Highway MB (160th Avenue) between Highway 50 (75th Street) and Highway C (93rd Street) in the Village of Bristol.
