A family-friendly community event last held 25 years ago is returning to Petrifying Springs Park on Saturday, Aug. 11.

Picnic in the Park is a day of live music, interactive family activities and concessions, aimed at continuing to raise awareness and educate the public on the value of parks. It is hosted by Kenosha County Parks and County Executive Jim Kreuser.

The festivities officially begin at noon, closing with fireworks at dusk. Petrifying Springs Park is located at 5555 Seventh St. in the Village of Somers.

Food and refreshments will be available at the Petrifying Springs Biergarten, where live bands will perform from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Near the Biergarten area, there will be free kids games, as well as informational booths from community organizations.

Western Kenosha County Transit will provide shuttle services for visitors to pavilion and parking areas, including overflow parking located at University of Wisconsin-Parkside Parking Lot B.

The return of Picnic in the Park follows a highly successful Kenosha County Parks 90th anniversary celebration, which attracted thousands of people to Petrifying Springs Park last summer. Picnic in the Park was last held in the late-1980s and early-1990s, under then-County Executive John Collins.

“I am very excited to bring this tradition back to Kenosha County,” Kreuser said. “There are a lot of great things going on in our parks these days, and Petrifying Springs is looking better than ever. This will be a great time for people to come out and discover the beauty of our parks system, or rediscover it.”

Kenosha County Parks Director Matthew Collins said Picnic in the Park is a celebration for the entire community.

The entertainment lineup on the main stage at the Petrifying Springs Biergarten includes regional acts, culminating with headliner Naima Adedapo, a singer-songwriter who grew up in Milwaukee and was a finalist in Season 10 of “American Idol.”

“We want people to come out and have some fun with us, and to realize all that’s available to them so close to home in our county parks,” Collins said.
