[ARCHIVED] Sheriff urges people to take precautions during extreme cold spell

Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth would like to emphasize public safety with the dangerously low temperatures forecast for the remainder of the week. Sheriff Beth urges residents to take precautions during this period of frigid weather. Stay indoors if you can. Prolonged exposure to the cold can lead to serious health issues including frostbite and in extreme cases, hypothermia. Therefore, the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department urges residents to minimize outside activities.

If you must go outside, dress in layers and make sure your vehicle is properly winterized. Keep the gas tank at least half-full. Carry a Winter Emergency Car Kit including blankets, extra clothing, hand warmers, a flashlight with spare batteries, drinking water, non-perishable foods, windshields scraper, shovel, flares and jumper cables in the trunk.

Finally, remember to take the time to check on your loved ones, friends, and those with access and functional needs to make sure they are safe, including pets. Below are the locations of warming centers or shelters throughout the county that you can utilize if you lack warm shelter. As always anyone needing emergency assistance should call 9-1-1.
