[ARCHIVED] Kenosha County receives state grant to advance shoreline protection efforts at Kemper Center

The Kenosha County Division of Parks this week received another state grant award to address shoreline protection needs on the Kemper Center property.

This $30,000 Wisconsin Coastal Management Program award will help to advance stormwater management and site grading plans, assess the current salvageable material along the shoreline and continue regulatory coordination for shoreline stabilization.

All of this work represents the third phase of a planning process to protect a Lake Michigan shoreline that has been battered by erosion in recent years.

“It’s important that we protect this valuable county asset,” said Kenosha County Executive Jim Kreuser. “It’s all the better when we’re able to obtain state and federal dollars to make these needed investments.”

The Coastal Management grant is a 50-50 match, requiring the county to allocate an equal amount for the work. The Kenosha County award was one of seven awards in a $176,000 package that Gov. Tony Evers announced earlier this week.

The easternmost location in the Kenosha County Parks system, Kemper Center, 6501 Third Ave. in Kenosha, has suffered the effects of erosion, most notably during major storm events in 2015 and 2016. Severe waves during storms have caused localized flooding on the bike path and damage to landscaping along the shore.

“We’re grateful that the state has continued to recognize the importance of our work at Kemper Center,” said Kenosha County Parks Director Matthew Collins. “We look forward to continuing to work with our state partners on this and other restorative projects in our parks.”
