There is a very important special election for the 64th Assembly District on Tuesday April 30. This district covers almost all of the Village & Town of Somers, the north side of Kenosha and part of the south side. Call 262-653-2552 to find out if you are eligible to vote in this election.
No doubt, voters are experiencing voter fatigue, political exhaustion and would probably love to see several months (maybe years) pass without turning on the TV to more commercials with politicians right-fighting with what appears to be little concern for Joe and Jane Average.
Before you throw in the towel on the great American freedom of the right to vote, consider not having the right to cast a ballot! In 1790, only white, male property owners could vote. Before 1920, women couldn’t vote. In 1965, The Voting Rights Act protected the rights of minority voters and eliminated voting barriers such as the literacy test. The Act is expanded and renewed in 1970, 1975, and 1982. The Federal Voting Standards and Procedures Act requires states to streamline registration, voting, and other election procedures.
So you see people that came before us have gone to great lengths to ensure that OUR rights and liberties are maintained and that the United States of America remain a system of Government that is “for the People and by the People”. If you don’t participate, that’s nobody’s fault but your own. Of course you have the right to not vote, but many would argue that you have then voted to not complain about the political system as well. My mother always reminded me that I could be a part of the problem or a part of the solution.
