On Thursday, May 30, 2019, The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department received notification of a Mumps related incident from members of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement office. The detainee was being held in a dorm at the Kenosha County Detention Center (KCDC) and had been identified by medical staff after that person was transferred to a different facility as showing symptoms of an infectious viral disease known as the Mumps. The Mumps diagnosis has been confirmed and the detainee is receiving treatment for this disease. Previously established departmental policies and procedures to the transmission-based illness precautions were immediately implemented and the identified dorm was placed into isolation.
The detainee was immediately transferred to a medical isolation room upon their return to the Kenosha County Detention Center. The detainee was evaluated for the Mumps by the Kenosha County Division of Health. The inmate/detainee population identified to have been housed with or that had contact with the identified person has also been isolated within their dorm as a precautionary measure in compliance with Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department Policy and Procedure. These policies are in accordance with the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) guidelines for the prevention and control of Mumps. Mumps is spread through direct contact with saliva or respiratory droplets from the mouth nose, or throat.
The Sheriff’s Department is working in conjunction with the Kenosha County Division of Health to facilitate the testing procedures to ensure the safety of all Department personnel and people held in custody.
