[ARCHIVED] Caution urged, cooling centers available as temperatures spike

Hot weather thermometer

The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department, Division of Emergency Management and the Division of Health are urging people to prepare for extreme heat this Thursday, July 18, 2019, to Saturday, July 20, 2019, by staying cool, hydrated, and informed.

A period of hot and humid conditions is forecast to occur on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. These hot and humid conditions will result in heat index values in the middle to upper 90s, which could rise to above 100 degrees on Friday. Everyone is reminded to take care of yourself and to check in on family, friends, neighbors, and pets during periods of extreme heat.

People at higher risk of a heat-related illness include infants and young children, the elderly, individuals who are overweight, and people with chronic medical conditions. Many victims of heat-related deaths are socially isolated, maintaining little contact with family and friends. It is important to check in on those that are vulnerable during extreme heat.

Agencies across Kenosha County open their doors as cooling centers during periods of extreme heat. These centers are a great place for people to come into an air-conditioned facility and get some relief from the heat.
