The public is invited to a Dec. 1 public involvement meeting to discuss proposed improvements at the intersection of Kenosha County highways A (Seventh Street) and Y (22nd Avenue) in the Village of Somers.

This meeting will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Somers Village Hall, 7511 12th St., with an open-house format.

As proposed, the existing stop-controlled intersection would be reconstructed as a single-lane roundabout. Real estate acquisition is slated to begin this winter, followed by utility work in summer 2022 and construction to tentatively begin in summer 2023.

The purpose of this project is to improve the safety of the intersection and maintain acceptable traffic operations. The crash rate for this intersection from 2013 through 2017 was 1.41 crashes per million entering vehicles, which is significantly higher than the statewide average of 1.0 crashes per million for similar rural intersections.

Permanent right-of-way acquisition would be required to accommodate a roundabout at this intersection. Temporary grading easements would also be required to construct the improvements.

Exhibits on display at the Dec. 1 meeting will show the recommended alternative with needed real estate acquisitions and the proposed detour routes during construction. The county's real estate representatives will be available to answer questions about the land acquisition process.

There will not be a formal presentation at the meeting; rather, attendees may stop in at their convenience and view exhibits, meet with project staff, ask questions and provide feedback.

Meeting attendees are required to follow current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines and wear a face mask if they have not been vaccinated.

For more information about the project, or if you are not able to attend the meeting, please contact Doug Coeur, Kenosha County Division of Highways engineer, at 262-857-1870 or, or Caleb Manske, consultant project manager, at 262-317-3332 or People with hearing, vision or speech impairments may request an interpreter or assistance by contacting Manske or through the Wisconsin Relay System at 711.
