[ARCHIVED] County Trunk Highway H Projects to improve pavement conditions and modify speed limits

A pavement resurfacing project on County Trunk Highway “H” (88th Avenue) from State Trunk Highway 50 to County Trunk Highway “S” (Washington Road) will begin on Monday August 25, 2014. The project will involve resurfacing the existing pavement with new asphalt. The existing asphalt has deteriorated due to heavy traffic volumes and some areas experienced severe damage last winter. Additional enhancements will include a left turn lane at the City yard waste site, dedicated bike lanes on both sides of the highway and epoxy pavement markings throughout. The epoxy pavement marking will provide high visibility to guide motorists, particularly at the major intersections of STH 50, 65th Street, 60th Street, 58th Place, State Trunk Highway 158 and County Trunk Highway “S”.

County Trunk Highway “H” will remain open to traffic for the duration of the project. During paving operations there will be moving lane closures managed by flagging personnel. Motorists are asked to stay alert and use caution in the vicinity of construction workers and equipment.

In an effort to improve traffic safety and operations, a speed limit modification on County Trunk Highway “H” from the State Line to County Trunk Highway “S” will be posted. All of the existing 45-mph speed limits will be reduced to 40-mph. In addition, a segment of the existing 35-mph zone will be extended south from 116th Street to 122nd Street. The reduced speed limit has been established to improve the safe operation of the numerous intersections and access points utilized by the high volume of motorists on County Trunk highway “H”. In addition, there has been an increased use of bicycles and pedestrian crossings.

County Board Supervisor Boyd Frederick has been an advocate of improvements to the pedestrian crossing at the intersection of County trunk Highway “H” and 65th Street. The pedestrian crossing has experienced increased use and Supervisor Frederick has supported measures such as the reduced speed limit and enhanced pavement markings to improve the safety of the crossing. The Kenosha County Board of Supervisors recently approved the speed limit modifications. The new 40-mph signs will be installed this week.
