[ARCHIVED] Memorial Day Ceremony at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery

County Executive Jim Kreuser will attend Sunday’s Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 21731 Spring St., Union Grove.

It’s a historic year for the Veterans Memorial Cemetery and one that is directly tied to Kreuser and the late State Senator Joseph Andrea, D-Kenosha.

This year marks the 20th Anniversary of the groundbreaking for the cemetery, which was created as the result of Legislative action by Kreuser and Andrea.

“Joe and I talked a great deal about the need for a Veterans Cemetery and nursing home in our area,” Kreuser said. “We worked together to make it possible for area veterans to have an appropriate final resting place that not only acknowledged their great service to our country and would serve as a lasting memorial to their achievements and sacrifices, but also would be close to the place they called home.”

Kreuser authored the 1993 Assembly Bill 1277 that created Wisconsin Act 296 authorizing a Veterans Memorial Cemetery to be established in southeastern Wisconsin. Senator Andrea authored the state Senate Bill.

As Kreuser and Andrea had envisioned, the creation of the cemetery subsequently led to the expansion of the surrounding grounds to provide additional services to Wisconsin veterans. The site is now also home to the Wisconsin Veterans Home at Union Grove, which provides 24-hour skilled nursing care to veterans and their spouses.

“Joe would be so pleased and proud at the results of that piece of Legislation. Those shovels in the ground 20 years ago led to greater services and deserved recognition for the great sacrifices our state’s Veterans made to defend and protect our freedoms,” Kreuser said.

Sunday’s event is sponsored by state Veterans Affairs Secretary John Scocos and the state Department of Veterans Affairs. Governor Scott Walker and U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin, D-WI, will be the guest speakers.
