[ARCHIVED] County to host Veterans Day Celebration, Homeless Veteran Stand Down

The Kenosha County Division of Veterans Services is planning a special event as Veterans Day approaches.

Veterans, active duty military members and their families are invited to the 2017 Homeless Veterans Stand Down and Veterans Celebration from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, 2017, at the Kenosha County Job Center, 8600 Sheridan Road, Kenosha.

“The stand down is being held to reach out to homeless veterans and veterans at risk of becoming homeless,” said Ali Nelson, director of the Division of Veterans Services. “The celebration is to honor our United States military men and women who are actively serving and those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, as well as the sacrifices made by their families.”

County Executive Jim Kreuser said the event is a worthwhile opportunity to help veterans in need, and to pay tribute to veterans – past and present.

“It’s important to take some time around Veterans Day to stop and think about those who served to defend our country and the freedoms we enjoy,” Kreuser said. “This event at the Job Center is a wonderful way to do that, while also providing valuable outreach services to veterans.”

The Nov. 4 stand down and celebration highlights include:

  • Free breakfast served from 8 to 9 a.m.
  • Opening Ceremony from 9 to 10 a.m.
  • Free lunch served from noon to 1 p.m.
  • Available all day at no cost are: Legal services, haircuts, flu shots, free clothing, VA health care, information about financial assistance, veterans benefits and more.
  • Fun activities for the whole family and giveaways

Those wishing to attend the event are asked to RSVP to Ali Nelson at Ali.Nelson@kenoshacounty.org or 262-605-6690. More information about the Homeless Veterans Stand Down is available online at www.standdownsewi.org.

About Veterans Day:

Veterans Day is a federal holiday (previously known as Armistice Day) observed annually on Nov. 11, the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I in 1918. It is celebrated not only in the United States but in many other countries throughout the world.

In the United States, it is a day that honors all men and women that have served as military veterans in the United States Armed Forces. Veterans Day should not be mistaken with Memorial Day, which honors those who died while in military service.
