School Nursing Services
Kenosha Unified School District contracts with Kenosha County Public Health to provide school nursing services. Kenosha County Public Health Nurses work in the K-8 and charter schools. Each nurse is in one elementary school per day and in a middle school two days per week. School nurses perform:
- Vision screen all 2nd and 5th grade students and students referred by teachers
- Teach Family Life curriculum to the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th grade students
- Train and educate staff on how to give emergency medications
- Train office staff on how to administer daily medications
- Perform weekly counts on all controlled medications
- Write emergency health plans
- Case management for chronic health conditions (asthma, diabetes, anaphylaxis, etc.)
- Train and educate first responders in each building we cover
- Provide daily consulting to school staff regarding illness, injuries, and other medical issues
Definition of School Nursing
School nursing, a specialized practice of nursing, protects and promotes student health, facilitates optimal development, and advances academic success. School nurses, grounded in ethical and evidence-based practice, are the leaders who bridge health care and education, provide care coordination, advocate for quality student-centered care, and collaborate to design systems that allow individuals and communities to develop their full potential. Adopted by the NASN Board of Directors in February 2017.
