What is a peer support specialist/recovery coach?

A peer support specialist/recovery coach is a person who has lived experience in recovery from substance use and/or a mental health disorder. Peer support can offer support and resources to peers’ family members, friends, and significant others. There is no charge for these services.

Referrals can be accepted from individuals, family members, or other agencies. Please call the office to make an appointment with peer support or to speak with them over the phone.

Here’s what they do:

  • Cultivate empowering and supportive relationships
  • Use self-disclosure in order to deepen connection and inspire hope
  • Draw on their own lived experience as a valuable source of empathy
  • Provide information about community and recovery-oriented resources upon request
  • Value self-determination as a guiding ethical principle
  • Facilitate person-centered goal setting
  • Communicate effectively with their peers, other team members, and clinicians
  • Create an environment of respect for their peers and those with lived experience
  • Practice trauma-informed approaches in their peer relationships
  • Support many pathways to recovery, wellness, and meaningful living.
