[ARCHIVED] MEDIA RELEASE Animal Abuse Investigation

The clean-up of the Schmeckel farms continues and progress has been made.

Sheriff David Beth reports that daily inspections are occurring as planned and that the Schmeckel family is cooperating with the clean-up and efforts.

With the assistance of approximately 10 area farmers, the property at 20801-1st Street has undergone changes and improvements are evident. Much of this work was done over the extended holiday weekend as the area farming community gave of their time to help out.

Special equipment was brought in to assist in clearing out barns. A large amount of debris in and around the property has been disposed of.

The farm at 275- 248th Avenue currently has no livestock and the removal of animal waste and debris from this location is to follow as soon as possible.

Sheriff Beth remains committed to this the completion of this process and has given the Schmeckel family one week to rectify the situation at the farms. The Sheriff has directed Kenosha County Sheriff’s Deputies and Detectives to continue with the daily inspections of the progress.

Reports are being compiled, State of Wisconsin Lab tests to determine what may have caused the animal deaths are underway and results are pending. The entire case will have to be thoroughly reviewed by the Kenosha County District Attorney’s Office prior to any possible charges being considered.
